What are the regulatory obligations required by the EU?

In recent years, the European Union has been paying increasing attention to the issue of food safety and the need to inform consumers about the ingredients and production methods of the products they buy. This new policy has also involved the wine and spirits sector. Companies are now required to include a range of data on wine bottle labels to ensure maximum transparency for their customers, such as, for example, nutritional values, list of ingredients and allergens.

Space on labels is already limited compared to the amount of information that must be included. The European Union has granted the possibility of including this information within a digital label that can be reached through a QRcode applied on the label, complying with the guidelines published on December 8, 2023:

  1. The possibility of publishing through QRcodes the mandatory ingredient list indications with bolded allergens, nutritional table and disposal information is confirmed
  2. The QRcode must be printed in the same field of view as the other mandatory information.
  3. The Energy Value should still be physically printed in the same field of view as the other mandatory information.
  4. If ingredients are ONLY reachable by QRcode, Allergens must still be physically printed on the label, preceded by the word "Contains," though not necessarily in the same field of view as the other mandatory information.
  5. The new regulations apply to ALL packages intended for the final consumer.
  6. The QRcode must have clearly displayed that it contains ingredients, printing next to it the words "Ingredients" or Ingredients or Nutrition Statement; simple "i" or other abbreviations are NOT sufficient
  7. The QRcode must unequivocally link directly to the mandatory consumer information; other voluntary info can be there as long as it complies with EU Reg. 1169/2011.
  8. It is NOT permitted, or at any rate not advisable, to link the QRcode link to the home page of your own website.
  9. The link on each individual label MUST unambiguously link back to mandatory information specific to a single wine product, in a neutral environment that does NOT confuse the consumer.
  10. The mandatory information linked to the QRcode must be available throughout the shelf life of the product.

The best way to immediately comply with the new European Union Communication and stay on top of all regulations is to rely on 4Pack Wine&Spirits.
